The night’s activities had lasted much longer than I thought, and the sky was beginning to light in the east with the approaching sun. As the rays peeked above the horizon, Kieran returned to his horse form, and we wrapped Medb in cloaks before I rather roughly revived Lorcha. Disoriented and flustered, he looked at me suspiciously as he described not being able to remember anything. God forgive me, I lied, and said it was the same for me, though it was clear much had occurred during his period of unconsciousness.

The ride back to Cruachan was a quiet one, with Lorcha leading the way, and I trying my best to keep Medb on her horse. She was in an almost trancelike state, and the rhythm of Kieran’s movements often shifted her to one side or the other, and several times she came close to slipping off completely. I wished Lorcha had still been unconscious, or deaf, so that I could have spoken to Kieran and ascertained Medb’s condition. No such luck, so we awkwardly rode, and I kept her from falling without falling off for myself.

The village was quiet when we arrived, and I anxiously hoped all was well. We rode into the yard in front of the lodge, and the doors promptly flew open, and in seconds Ailill was there with us, his arms lifting Medb from Kieran’s back.

“She is alive?” His question held a note of desperation, and I was relieved my answer to that was affirmative. Ailill held her in his arms, her pale cheek pressed to his bare chest as he kissed her forehead. He pressed her closer to him, so that I thought he might wake her with the embrace, but Medb did not stir.

“See to the horses,” Ailill began, and turned very deliberately away from Lorcha, his gaze fixed on me. “Then come to the lodge. I would know what happened.” With that, Ailill turned and mounted the steps, his wife cradled in his arms, and disappeared inside the lodge.
